A memorable day exploring the lanes of the Lakes, not accessible by a large coach, on a ‘Mountain Goat’ minibus.
We travel over the Wrynose and Hardknott Passes, the steepest in England. We drive past the extraordinary remains of Hardknott Roman Fort, 1000ft up on the fells.
We break for lunch in Eskdale before boarding La’al Ratty, the ravenglass and eskdale railway.
In the afternoon, we drive onward to ‘Britain’s Favourite View’, Wastwater; England’s deepest and most dramatic lake. Our next destination is the splendid 14th Century Muncaster Castle surrounded by its internationally acclaimed gardens and famous for its World Owl Trust.
The beautiful scenery of the Coniston Fells and Coniston Water bring to an end this classic of all Lake District tours as we drive back to Keswick.
We journey via the shores of Ullswater, one of the most dramatic lakes in Cumbria, enjoying the spectacular views of mountains, plunging down to the lake, which inspired Wordsworth to compose his poem ‘Daffodils’.
We continue via the spectacular Kirkstone Pass to Bowness, where we break for lunch.
